In fact, there’s a saying: “The first generation builds the business. The statistics on third generation family businesses aren’t favorable. I’ve leaned on his experience and knowledge since day one. Sugarman: Lulu & Georgia was partially my father’s idea, so he fully supported this new venture from the start. Moore: How important was your family’s encouragement and support in embarking on a new venture? So it’s probably a combination of nature and nurture. But being around my father and observing his entrepreneurial spirit definitely helped bring out those elements of my personality – like the confidence to take risks and the ability to think outside the box. I think I was born with the passion, the self-motivation, and the trust in my intuition and convictions that make a great entrepreneur. It was never a goal of mine to start my own company.

Sugarman: Professional women often don’t have the time to compare and scrutinize a large array of products, an experience that can feel impersonal and overwhelming. Moore: Why should the professional woman shop at Lulu & Georgia? But my primary source of inspiration is my friends – from the way they shop and the products they are seeking for their own homes. We have modernized and reimagined several of those vintage styles in an effort to make more traditional patterns fresh and contemporary. Sugarman: A lot of my creative inspiration comes from vintage rugs designed by my family. Moore: Where do you get inspiration for Lulu & Georgia’s own design collections? I’ve actually scaled back my commitments at Decorative Carpets in an effort to help expand and build upon the popularity and success we’ve seen at Lulu & Georgia. Lulu & Georgia sells to the masses and hits a much more accessible price point.


Decorative Carpets caters to the hospitality and designer trades and is much more custom and bespoke in its offerings. It was a natural evolution in that we already had the sourcing – we had relationships with reputable and trustworthy mills and we had warehousing in Los Angeles. Sara Sugarman: Yes, Lulu and Georgia launched because of my experience working for my family business.

Kristina Moore: Was Lulu & Georgia a natural evolution for you as the daughter and still active participant in the family business - Decorative Carpets?
